History of Pyrmont

Pyrmont was originally a part of Governor Macarthur’s land. In 1806 he discovered a spring of cold water which he was told, was very much like one in the German spa town of Pyrmont. A privately operated toll bridge was constructed in 1858 connecting the area’s market gardens to the Queen Victoria Market. As the area grew, the Government constructed a new bridge which was completed in 1909 and remains in use today.
