History of Surry Hills

The move back to inner city areas by professional and business people has seen Surry Hills transform from its working class roots although it remains true to the character that typified it until the 1980s. The most significant improvement for the many singles and families who reside in the tree-lined suburb has been a re-direction of traffic away from the area.

The Fox Studios, Hordern Sports Pavilion and Oxford Street, famous for hosting the Sydney Mardi Gras are all within a stones throw of Surry Hills. It is also the home to News Limited’s headquarters and several favourite theatres such as Belvoir St, The Kirk and the Tom Mann Theatres.

Many grand old hotels and public bars in the area have been refurbished and turned into quality all night entertainment and music venues.
